My Wake up Call

It’s time to listen to what the universe is telling me. I was out on a hike this last weekend, listening to Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic” when it hit me…for the third time. You see the universe has been trying to tell me a message. It’s been coming in from different sources, in different ways, but the message is always the same and really quite clear: it is time to take action.

In “Big Magic” Gilbert talks about the creative process and the energy we receive when we have a new idea. I won’t go into detail about her thoughts (don’t want to ruin the book) but she describes ideas as if they are living creatures, visiting us and if they don’t find a welcome host, they move on, to the next person until the idea is expressed. It’s a fun and amusing way to look at the creative energy, but what stood out to me was that if we don’t take action on our ideas, we loose the energy. It is the action and the hard work that truly brings something to life. We need that creative spark to start the fire, but gathering kindling, building a structure of firewood, and tending to the flames are what get us a healthy, roaring fire. The hard work after the idea is was leads us to our point of realization.

As we approach the end of the year, this is a time where people start thinking about what changes they want to make in their lives and what action they want to take. We make lists. We make resolutions. We create visions. These can be great steps, but it’s what happens next that really shows what we are made of.

We grow not by avoiding the things we fear, but by moving through them.

So, why is taking action so challenging? Taking that first step towards something new can be scary. Fear creeps up at every turn – fear of failure, fear of doing it wrong, fear of success, fear of the unknown. We grow not by avoiding the things we fear, but by moving through them. Five simple ways you can take action now:

  1. Start small. You can’t eat an elephant all in one bite. (For the record I do NOT condone eating elephants.) As this saying demonstrates, the biggest tasks can only be achieved by breaking them down into smaller pieces. Start small. Progress is progress.
  2. Focus on one task and see it through to the end. You will be amazed by how much energy comes from completing a task. Whether it is cleaning off your desk, finishing an assignment, or trying a new class, you will feel energized just by taking action and finishing a task. Don’t be surprised if this inspires more forward momentum.
  3. Put your shoes on. Go outside. Movement and a change of scenery are good for the mind and body.
  4. Get some help. Is there something you’ve been thinking of doing for a while, but you aren’t sure how to start? Or you need a few extra hands? Use you support network to help you figure out a next step or help you where you are stuck. Don’t forget, coaches are great resources.   5. Shift your focus. Take a look at WHY you want to do your idea, instead of focusing on the action you are trying to take. Connect in with what is motivating you.
